Rangiroa

Rangiroa (dont le nom a pour origine "Rairoa", grand ciel) est le plus grand atoll des Tuamotu (82 km de long et de 5 à 33 km de large). Il est le deuxième plus grand atoll du monde par la superficie (environ 1.000 km2) après celui de Kwajalein en Micronésie.
Il est situé au nord-ouest des Tuamotu et à 355 km au nord est de Tahiti. Il fut découvert par le Hollandais Le Maire le 18 avril 1616.
