Pyroclastic flows are the potentially most destructive and deadly volcanic phenomenon. A mixture of hot volcanic gas and fragments of volcanic rocks ranging in size from fine dust to house-sized boulders, such flows cascade down the flanks of a volcano at hurricane speed and at temperatures that can be up to hundreds of degrees Celsius. Any object, be this a tree or a house, will be mowed down, and any living creature will be killed either due to thermal shock, the mechanical impact of the flow, or by asphyxiation from inhaling ash.
Pyroclastic flows entered into volcanological and collective conscience nearly 110 years ago, when an until then poorly known volcano wiped out the town of Saint-Pierre on the Caribbean island of Martinique, killing all but two of the roughly 28,000 people who were present in the town at the moment. The deadly agent was a strange cloud, which rather than rising up into the sky like a "normal" volcanic eruption cloud, rushed down from the volcano as a ground-hugging avalanche, and covered the distance of 8 km separating the unfortunate town from the volcano in about 2 minutes.
Since that tragedy, generations of volcanologists have been haunted and intrigued by pyroclastic flows, a quite elusive phenomenon whose generation and products seem to be the result of incredibly complex processes. A few volcanoes are notorious for producing pyroclastic flows during nearly all of their eruptions, like Merapi in Indonesia, where nearly 400 people were killed during a large eruption in October-November 2010, and Mayon in the Philippines, last active in December 2009. The Soufrière Hills on the Caribbean island of Montserrat produced countless pyroclastic flows between 1996 and 2010, causing death and devastation, but also allowing more detailed observation and documentation of these flows than has been ever obtained elsewhere.
Although not many volcanologists and volcano aficionados would have the Sicilian volcano Etna in their minds when thinking of pyroclastic flows, Etna is actually one of the busier producers of pyroclastic flows worldwide, and it has proved more "inventive" when it comes to how to generate these flows, and - luckily - they are rather small and confined to the immediate summit area and the upper flanks of the mountain. So the only people at risk are volcanologists, mountain guides, mountain rescue service staff, and occasional onlookers who enter the off-limits area. Since 1986, pyroclastic flows have occurred on at least 12-13 occasions, though others have probably passed unobserved. The most notable cases are the pyroclastic flows of the Bocca Nuova of 25 October 1999 (which I had the chance to see from only about 1 km distance), at the Southeast Crater on 16 November 2006 (again, I could witness numerous small pyroclastic flows at very close range but luckily had left the scene when a much bigger one occurred), and during a paroxysm at the New Southeast Crater on 10 April 2011 (on the steep slope of the Valle del Bove). In a surprising number of cases, people were present at close distance, but none of them have ever been hit by any of these pyroclastic flows.
One of the most exciting moments during the latest paroxysmal eruptive episode from Etna's New Southeast Crater early on 5 January 2012 was when a black cloud appeared on the slope of the erupting cone, which swept downward toward the snow-covered terrain at the base of the cone. When the cloud hit the snow, countless small puffs of steam rose. This video shows these scenes, and you can even see how the impact of the pyroclastic flow on the snow generates a small "lahar" - a volcanic mudflow, a phenomenon rarely observed at Etna. Next to pyroclastic flows, lahars are globally the second most deadly volcanic phenomenon, but luckily only one larger lahar is known to have occurred at Etna in historical time, in 1755.

Artists have always visited the South seas islands : Paul Gauguin in the late 19th century, Matisse in the 1920’s and quite a few others were inspired by the incredible treasure of colors found in the lagoons and reefs.

While fishing on the reef, we were intrigued by these deep green, ocre and purple nuances and thought that some altitude would reveal this incredible palette.

The Paumotu people live off copra (dried coconut pulpit), pearl farms and tourism, quite particularly thanks to the magnificent diving sites.Indeed, Fakarava is a part of 7 "biosphere reserve" classified atolls by UNESCO in 2006; that shows the luxuriance of this land and its unique lagoon. This lagoon is fed by 2 pass: The Garuae pass (in the North, 1600m wide, the biggest of Polynesia) and the Tetamanu pass (in the South). While diving, you can meet all types of fishes found in the Tuamotu Archipelago: barracudas, groupers, loaches, manta rays, eagle rays, grey reef tiger, hammerhead sharks, dolphins and turtles, without forgetting the luxuriant corals.

Diving sites on this atoll constitute simply a paradise for the fauna and the flora, but also for the divers. The interest for Fakarava is also found on the main land by visiting a pearl farm and discovering the Tetamanu former village with its church built in coral in 1874. But also and especially by returning to a simple and protected life, only guided by nature and it breathless show.

This KAP session was one of the 31 KAP & PAP sessions we had over a week stay on Easter Island… Over 10 000 images to sort, delete and edit…

The sun was out by 7:40 AM and we only had a window of 3 minutes of perfect light, the kite was already up in the air and as soon as the sun rose over the ocean the rig was up above the Moais. It was interesting to see that a dozen other visitors had also made it for sunrise, but all of them were facing the sun, we were looking for the shadows !

On the morning of 7 September 2004, a small crack opened at the eastern base of the Southeast Crater cone and lava began to ooze out, forming a tiny flow just a few hundred meters long before the activity tapered out, a few hours later.

Three days later, on 10 September 2004, the new eruption started in earnest - a new vent opened at about 2600 m elevation, releasing a more substantial lava flow that cascaded down the steep western face of the Valle del Bove. This eruption was peculiar because there was almost no explosive activity, and the emitted lava seemed somewhat "old" - it was coolar and more crystalline than "normal" lava flows at Etna. To make things more serious, the start of this eruption was neither preceded nor accompanied by any noticeable seismic activity, so it came as a total surprise. Luckily it occurred far away from populated areas and cultivated land.

Still, it was a rather large eruption - it lasted six months, until 8 March 2005, and it emitted some 60 million cubic meters of lava, more than the previous eruptions of 2001 and 2002-2003. And it was beautiful, especially so during its first few weeks when weather conditions permitted easy access to the vent and we were frequently there.

This photo was taken during a visit to the active lava flow made with my friend Pippo Scarpinati sometime in late September 2004. At that time, my old Canon AE1 - with which I took this photograph - showed signs of aging, and the my lens had suffered from being too often in dense, acid volcanic gas plumes. Soon I would finally shift from slides and film to digital photography, a step many of my friends and colleagues had done much earlier.

The main branch loacated on 42nd and 5th Ave. This beautiful building has so many hallways and stairwells that more resemble a fine mansion or museum then a library.

The hallway in the upper area has an art gallery, while the lower hall leads to some offices and other library specific rooms (books, computers, microfilm, etc).

One minute before, the latest paroxysm from the New Southeast Crater on Etna had been going on rather quietly - surely enough, there were two spectacular lava fountains many hundreds of meters high, but it was all kind of "clean", or "smooth", just very beautiful but nothing particular compared to the previous paroxysmal eruptive episodes from the same crater. Then, at 06.20 h (local time), the southeast flank of the cone that has grown in recent months around the New Southeast Crater, ruptured as a new eruptive fissure opened from the crater rim down to the base of the cone. A line of lava fountains sprang from a number of vents along this fissure, and the fountains that had been playing from vents within the crater immediately lost their splendor.

To us, a group of Etna lovers, photographers, and Alpine rescue service staff, plus myself, the show unfolding before our eyes was beautiful and breathtaking beyond description. Etna once more had invented one of her surprising twists, something we're always certain to see without having the faintest idea what it will be.

The paroxysm lasted some 20 more minutes, then the vents within the crater stopped fountaining; by 06.50 h also the lowest of the newly-formed vent stopped fountaining, and there was some ash emission before all died down - and the cone reappeared from the ash, gas and dust clouds.

It had changed beyond recognition.

One of my favorite activities on Etna when it is not erupting is to document its various volcanic features - craters, cones, lava flows, but also the vegetation that develops on these features - because sooner or later these images will show places that are no longer there or look very different ... or entirely new features. Over the past 22 years, since my first visit to Etna in September 1989, the shape of the volcano has locally changed beyond recogition. The large cone in the center, the Old Southeast Crater with its steep sulfur-covered summit, was a low, unconspicuous heap of stones at the time of my first visit. Much of this cone grew during dozens of violent eruptive episodes ("paroxysms") between September 1999 and July 2001. In the spring of 2007 it erupted for the last time, then it passed on the job to a new vent on its lower east (left) flank.

That new vent was a collapse depression, something that is called "pit crater" in the volcanological terminology. This pit crater produced three large paroxysmal eruptive episodes in September and November 2007 and on 10 May 2008, just before the latest flank eruption of Etna. A new, small pit crater opened on 6 November 2009 on the lower east rim of the 2007 pit and gradually enlarged by collapse, and partly coalesced with the earlier pit. This constellation was the place where a first spectacular paroxysm with beautiful lava fountains and flows and a tall ash plume occurred during the moonlit night of 12-13 January 2011, and "the pit crater" became widely known.

Since then, there have been 10 more of these paroxysmal eruptive episodes, on 18 February, 10 April, 12 May, 9, 19, 25, and 30 July, and on 5, 12, and 20 August. Each of these events has thrown considerable quantities of volcanic rock onto the surroundings of the crater, which have gradually piled up into a huge, new volcanic cone, the newest volcanic construct that exists on this planet, and probably the construction is far from finished. This new cone now stands approximately 150 m above the elevation of the original pit crater; if it continues to grow at the same rate through another, say, 10 to 15 paroxysms, it might reach or even overtop the elevation of the old Southeast Crater. Chances are that Etna will continue to produce this sort of activity, since the volcano appears to be structurally stable and a flank eruption appears unlikely in the very short term, so that all magma will have to go to the summit craters. Many people here - including myself - have visions of the new cone standing like a twin next to its older "brother". Time will tell whether you will see, one day, a photo showing the twin Southeast Craters, and then, the younger of the two overtopping its older sibling ??? This is one of the most amazing things a volcanologist can dream of seeing before her or his eyes - the birth of a new volcanic mountain, right from the start.

It's january 2011, the year has just begun and we decided to kick this year off with a great location in Italy; Castello di S.

The airport: same routine as usual, Bart walks straight through customs to get as soon as possible at the car rental service desk to avoid to be waiting in line. I get the luggage and the follow. While i'm waiting for the bag to pass by on the conveyer belt it feels like someone is trying to get my wallet out of the back pocket of my jeans. Irritated i turn around, ready to confront whomever is trying to steel my wallet, and i stare into the shining teeth of a german shepherd. The uniformed police officer holding the leash of the dog is not amused. He barks at me: you have a bag? And answer: yes, it coming right there. He says: get it, and come with me. I do as i'm told and follow.

about 10 minutes after this, i'm standing naked in a little grey room that remind me of those interrogation rooms as shown in those old movies about the nazi's and the gestapo. The officer asks me if a brought any illegal goods. No, off course not. He offers me less trouble if i get it out of the bag myself instead of them. Again: i don't have anything.
I have to turn and after that i can put clothes on again. Then why where you pointed out by the dog? Because i'm from Holland and it's no crime there, i've smoked one yesterday and i git the same jeans on. I sort of try to smile, hoping the officer gets the irony. He does: get your bag and get out of here he says.
My god! What a great start of 2011 and this trip. The car rental was busy and Bart has just pulled up as I come out. I get in the car and tell him what happened; i think he laughed continuously for the next 15 minutes.

Then; time to meet up with X, who drove all the way up to Italy. We have a fun night with drinks, cigarette, inhalers and laughs.

Early morning, hangover. Gotta go, gotta hurry. We leave and park the cars down the hill. It's an hour walking up to the castle. We know this. We've been here before. We just never found a way in. By the intel we have, it's even easier to access now.

The surrounding park is quiet, and it's still dark outside. We sneak into the castle by pushing each other through a small hole in a wall.

Inside we wait for the first light. The lighter it gets, the more amazed I am. This castle is beyond believe, this equally cool as it is sick. The castle has been described as a personal disney-esque alhambra. Which is by far the way to describe this. Moorish architecture redesigned by the man Walt Disney himself on a shitload of acid.

Amaze yourself about the wonderfully detailed design of this castle as you go through the photos. I've put in some 'lesser' photos because of the rooms and details they show. I have had better days, photography wise. I think i need to go back again...
